What Is PNG to SVG Conversion?

Converting a PNG (Portable Network Graphics) to SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) transforms a pixel-based image into a mathematical description of shapes and curves. While PNG stores color values for each individual pixel, SVG uses coordinates, paths, and fill colors to describe the image — allowing it to scale to any size without pixelation.

PNG is an excellent raster format with lossless compression and alpha transparency support. However, when you need to resize a graphic — for a billboard, a business card, or a responsive website — pixels become a limitation. SVG solves this by being resolution-independent: a 16×16 icon and a 1600×1600 poster use the same file with perfect sharpness at both sizes.

Why Convert PNG to SVG?

  • Infinite scalability — SVGs look sharp on retina displays, 4K monitors, and print at any DPI.
  • Smaller file sizes for simple graphics — icons and logos are often lighter in SVG than in PNG.
  • CSS and JavaScript control — SVG elements can be styled, animated, and made interactive on the web.
  • Transparency by default — SVG natively supports transparency without the overhead of an alpha channel.
  • Print-ready — vector files are the industry standard for professional printing and signage.

Tips for Best PNG to SVG Results

Start with the highest resolution PNG you have. More pixels give the tracer more information to work with, resulting in smoother curves and more accurate shapes. A 512px or 1024px source will produce much better results than a 64px thumbnail.

For logos and icons, the Simple or Sharp preset usually works best. Use the Detailed preset for complex illustrations with many colors and gradients. If the SVG looks noisy, increase the detail slider (higher value = less noise) or reduce color precision.

PNG to SVG ConverterFrequently asked questions

Does the converter preserve PNG transparency?

Yes. Our vectorizer fully supports the PNG alpha channel. Transparent areas in your PNG are preserved in the SVG output, making it ideal for logos and icons with transparent backgrounds.

What size PNG can I convert?

Images up to 20 MB are supported. Very large PNGs (above 2048px) are automatically downscaled to ensure fast processing. For best results with logos, a 512–1024px PNG is ideal.

Why is the SVG file larger than my PNG?

SVG describes shapes with mathematical paths rather than compressed pixels. For complex photographic images, SVGs can be larger. For simple graphics like logos and icons, SVGs are often comparable in size but gain infinite scalability.

What is the difference between color and B&W mode?

Color mode traces all colors in your image, producing a multi-layered SVG. Black & white mode converts the image to a single-color silhouette, which is ideal for line art, stamps, and high-contrast designs.

Can I vectorize a photo-quality PNG?

You can, but the result will be an artistic, posterized rendering rather than a photorealistic reproduction. Vectorization works best on images with clear shapes and limited colors — logos, icons, illustrations, and pixel art.

Is this converter truly free?

Yes. Guest users get 5 free conversions per day, and registered users get 80. All processing happens in your browser — we never see your files.
