How to Edit a PDF Online for Free: Text, Signature, Annotations

The PDF: Designed Not to Be Edited

The PDF was designed to look exactly the same everywhere — on any screen, any printer. The price of that reliability: a PDF isn't a document you can rewrite like a Word file. Each line of text is placed at a precise position, with its own font, and nothing "flows" from one line to the next.

That's why a simple correction — a wrong date, a typo in an address, a missing signature — often sends people looking for an expensive subscription. For most everyday needs, a browser-based editor is enough.

What a PDF editor can and can't do

Correcting a line, adding text, signing, annotating: yes. Reflowing a whole paragraph like in a word processor: no — for that, go back to the source document (Word, Google Docs) and export the PDF again.

What You Can Do with the AwesomeToolkit PDF Editor

The PDF editor runs entirely in your browser with PDF.js and pdf-lib: your document is never uploaded, which matters for contracts, invoices or administrative forms.

Edit Existing Text

Click on a line of the PDF to retype it, or drag it to move it. The editor keeps the original font whenever it can find it — the standard PDF fonts, the font file itself, or its Google Fonts version — and only falls back to the closest equivalent as a last resort. A find and replace bar changes a word throughout the document.

Add Text and Fill Forms

Add a text box anywhere: to fill in a form that has no fields, write a date, a reference or a note.

Sign a PDF

Draw your signature with the mouse, a stylus or your finger on a touch screen, then place it on the page. It's saved locally in your browser so you can reuse it on your next documents.

Annotate and Highlight

Highlighter, rectangles, ellipses, lines, arrows and freehand drawing: everything you need to review a document or point out a passage.

Images, Page Numbers and Whiteout

Insert an image (logo, stamp, scanned signature), number the pages automatically, or cover an area with whiteout.

Step by Step: Sign a Contract

  1. Open the PDF in the editor.
  2. Go to the signature page using the page list.
  3. Choose the Signature tool and draw your signature.
  4. Place and resize it in the signature area.
  5. Add the date and "Read and approved" with the text tool if needed.
  6. Export the PDF: annotations are flattened into the file, so the recipient sees them exactly as you placed them.

Whiteout is not redaction

The whiteout tool places a white rectangle over the content: the original text remains in the PDF data and can be recovered. To truly remove confidential information, edit the source document, or edit the line itself so it's removed from the page.

Electronic Signature: Is It Legally Valid?

A drawn signature on a PDF is a simple electronic signature. It's accepted for many everyday documents (quotes, internal forms, rental documents, some contracts between individuals). For documents requiring a high level of proof — notarial deeds, some public contracts — a qualified signature from a certified provider is required. When in doubt, ask the person requesting the document which format they accept.

Before and After Editing

Conclusion

For corrections, signatures and annotations, there's no need for paid software: a browser-based PDF editor does the job in a few minutes, keeps the original fonts and never sends your document anywhere. Keep the source file for deep rewrites, and use the editor for everything else.
