What file size does the CAF accept?

10 MB for the whole document (all pages together), as PDF, JPG, PNG, GIF. An iPhone photo in HEIC must first be converted to JPG; a scan that is too heavy can be compressed.

Why does ANTS refuse my document?

For a vehicle registration, users report a limit of 1 MB per document, as PDF, PNG, JPG. A phone photo is often larger: scale it down or compress the PDF, then try again.

My file was accepted, then rejected as unreadable: what now?

Take the document again flat, in daylight, cropped to the page, then compress it just enough to fit the limit: too much compression blurs the text. A PDF usually stays sharper than a photo of the same size.

How much can I send on Démarches simplifiées?

200 MB of attachments per save of the form, as PDF, Word, Excel, OpenDocument, JPG or PNG. Some procedures set a lower limit, shown next to the field.

Most refused documents fail for one of these reasons. Each one takes a minute to fix, with no software to install and without your documents leaving your device.

iPhone photo refused (HEIC)

iPhones often save photos as HEIC, a format most administrations do not accept (the CAF takes PDF, JPG, PNG, GIF). Convert it to JPG: the photo keeps its quality.

File too large

Phone photos and scans often weigh several MB. CAF: 10 MB for the whole document; ANTS (vehicle registration): 1 MB per document; France Travail: 5 MB. Compress the PDF or the image to the size you need.

Multi-page document

A multi-page document (payslips, a lease) usually has to be sent as one file — at the CAF, 10 MB for all pages together. Put the photos of the pages in one PDF, or merge several PDFs.

Document rejected as unreadable

A document photographed at an angle, sideways or with the table around it is often rejected. Straighten it and crop it to the page before sending; photograph it flat, in daylight, without flash.

Document photo too large

A phone photo is 3,000 to 4,000 pixels wide, far more than a document needs. Scaling it to about 2,000 pixels wide keeps it readable and cuts its weight — useful for the 1 MB ANTS limit.

For a driving licence, the photo is not uploaded as a file: you enter the e-photo code given by an approved photo booth or photographer. For an ID card or a passport, the photo (or its code) is handed over at the town hall appointment. For other uses, prepare a 35 × 45 mm photo to print.
