How it works
WebP is a modern image format developed by Google in 2010, designed to provide superior lossless and lossy compression for images on the web. It uses advanced predictive coding to encode images, analyzing surrounding pixels to predict values and only encoding the differences. This approach produces files that are 25-34% smaller than equivalent JPEG images at the same perceptual quality.
Unlike JPEG, WebP supports transparency (alpha channel), animation, and both lossy and lossless compression in a single format. It is based on the VP8 video codec technology and uses a container format derived from the RIFF specification. Since its introduction, WebP has gained widespread adoption and is now supported by all major browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and Opera.
